This work is a giant banner composed of excerpts from the three short stories “Bag” “Royalty,” and “Flowers and Birds” in the latest standalone book“Neo-Manyo” (Pie International) published in 2023, which is based on the Manyoshu. “Bag” tells the story of packing and transporting fruits in various bags such as paper and net bags. “Royalty”features a page flipping through aristocrats, soldiers, monks, fishermen, elegant people, friends, and acquaintances from each social class mentioned in the Manyo. “Flowers and Birds” is a natural history writing based on the Manyoshu writing about celestial bodies, the oceans, high peaks, weather, flora, and fauna.

Artist, Manga Artist
Born in 1967 in Miyazaki Prefecture, Yuichi Yokohama is an artist and a manga author. He graduated from the Musashino Art University Department of Oil Painting. While initially engaged in fine art production, he began to publish manga after 2000, stating that “time can be expressed” through it. His creative works, later called “neo manga,” have been highly acclaimed in various fields. Today, he is active as a contemporary artist. His works include “New Engineering,” “Travel,” “NIWA,” “Baby Boom,” “Between World Maps” (all published by East Press), “Outdoor” (Kodansha), “Room” (Harmonica Books), and his art collection “Yuichi Yokohama Colored Art Collection” (Bluemark) among others. His works have been translated and published in Europe and the United States. Recent major exhibitions include “Yuichi Yokohama, The Complete Neo-Manga Record:I Draw Time” (Kawasaki City Museum, Kanagawa, 2010), “Aichi Triennale 2013” (Various wall panels throughout Nagoya, 2013), and“Roppongi Crossing 2007” (Mori Art Museum, Tokyo, 2007).
